Xbox Controller Won't Turn On: 6 Fixes
What to do when your Xbox controller shows no sign of life.
Fresh batteries
Start with a brand-new pair of AA batteries. Rechargeable packs lose capacity over time and can fail suddenly.
Check battery contacts
Remove the batteries and inspect the metal contacts. Bend them slightly outward if they look flat, and clean any corrosion with isopropyl alcohol.
Try a USB cable
Connect the controller to the console or PC with a USB-C cable. If it works on USB, the problem is power-related, not the board.
Power cycle
Hold the Xbox button for 10 seconds, remove batteries for a minute, then retry.
Firmware update
If it turns on via USB, update firmware in the Xbox Accessories app.
Board damage
If nothing works, the power circuit on the main board may be damaged — usually from a drop or liquid. Repair shops can replace the power components.
