How to Test a Used Controller Before Buying

A 5-minute checklist to avoid buying a broken second-hand controller.

Connect and detect

Bring a laptop or phone. Connect the controller and open GPadTester — press any button to wake it.

Check stick drift

Leave both sticks untouched. Resting values should be under 0.1. Any drift on a used controller will only get worse.

Press every button

Press each button, bumper and trigger several times. Watch for missed or double registrations.

Full stick circles

Rotate both sticks in slow full circles. The on-screen dot should trace a smooth circle with no flat spots or jumps.

Test vibration and battery

Run the vibration test, and ask how long a charge lasts. Under 2 hours on a DualSense means a worn battery.
