Hall Effect Sticks Explained: The Permanent Drift Fix

Why hall-effect analog sticks never drift and how to upgrade your controller.

How normal sticks work

Standard sticks use potentiometers — physical contacts that wear down over time, causing drift. Every traditional controller drifts eventually.

How hall-effect sticks work

Hall-effect sticks measure position with magnets and sensors. Nothing physically touches, so there is nothing to wear out. They cannot develop drift from wear.

Controllers that have them

Some third-party controllers ship with hall-effect sticks. Check the specs before buying if drift-free operation matters to you.

Upgrade your existing controller

Hall-effect replacement modules exist for PS5, Xbox and Switch controllers. Installation requires soldering, so factor in a repair shop if you don't solder.

Verify after upgrade

After installing, run our Stick Drift Test — resting values should sit at exactly 0.00.
