Controller Not Detected in Browser? Here's Why

Fix a gamepad that doesn't show up in online controller testers.

Press a button first

Browsers only reveal a controller after you press a button — this is a privacy feature of the Gamepad API, not a bug.

Use Chrome or Edge

Chromium browsers have the best Gamepad API support. Safari and Firefox support fewer controllers.

Check the cable

Charge-only USB cables carry power but no data. Try a different cable.

Close other apps

Steam, DS4Windows or other controller software can grab the device exclusively. Close them and reload the page.

Test in Windows

Open joy.cpl (Win+R) to confirm Windows itself sees the controller. If Windows doesn't see it, the problem is the cable, port or controller — not the browser.
